It may be hard to believe today, but following World War II many American housewives were happy to ditch their mother's and grandmother's hardwood floors for more "modern" options. Today, new homeowners hope to find gorgeous hardwood floors beneath several decades worth of carpet, linoleum, and underlayment. While one of the most expensive options in flooring, there is nothing quite like a hardwood floor. Some worry about scrapes or small dents, but I think that just adds character. Not to mention, hardwood is unique in that it can be refinished several times before needing to be replaced.
