LVP & LVT

Luxury vinyl plank and tile (some refer to it as laminate) hit the flooring world by storm at the turn of the millennium and have remained popular ever since: and for good reason. Once thought of as a cheaper alternative to hardwood, some installers, myself included, recommend this over hardwood in many situations. It's resilient, comes in highly water resistant varieties, and can often be floated over the top of troublesome and or dangerous floors from yesteryear (i.e. asbestos tile). LVP tends to mimic hardwood while LVT tends to mimic ceramic tile.

The technology and science behind LVP and LVT has exploded in recent years, making it better than ever. I highly recommend LVP and LVT anywhere where water could be an issue. It's also a great option for pets, as it is very easy to clean and maintain.

Pros:

  • inexpensive compared to hardwood

  • wide variety of colors and designs

  • some products are water resistant

  • resilient and long lasting

  • great for pets and muddy boots

  • easy to clean and maintain

Cons:

  • cannot be refinished

  • repair options are limited

  • discernible from real wood to the touch
